Why is the theme of this project important?

Life if full of unpredictable events and sometimes bad things happen to good people. Stuff happens. I like to believe that my strength as a writer is in creating complex characters with deep wounds. The kind of hurts that only God can heal. Almost There is a story about the ugly stuff in life that happens to some people as children and young adults that impact their choices and often their options.

Almost There is a prequel to a novel I’ll be releasing in November. It’s the backstory for  Mekhi and Benxi, supporting characters that my readers have already become acquainted with in my Samaritan Woman series. Other titles are An Inconvenient Friend, What Kind of Fool, and Righteous Ways. I’ve also introduced a new character. Her name is Zane.

As for new readers, I think Almost There is the perfect place to begin with my books because it’s the story that happens before An Inconvenient Friend begins. In that respect, it stands completely alone as a title for the series.

What did you learn about yourself while writing this book?

That I have to stay true to the story, no matter what my brand is or what my readers expect of me.

An Interview with E.N.Joy

How does your book relate to your present situation, education, spiritual practice or other life path? I can honestly say that the main character, Helen's, story, is about 60% of who I was. As I look back on the life of Helen, I catch myself cringing, but then rejoicing at the same time. Because like Helen, in my present situation I might not be where I want to be in life and my walk with Christ, but I sure ain't where I used to be! If Jesus had not saved me from my own self, I fear what damage I could have done to those around me. In past years I was a prime example of how hurt people hurt people. I was mad at the world when all the while the only person I should’ve been mad at was myself-for wasting time on being mad. My misery fed off company. So if you came around me and you weren't already miserable-give me an hour tops and you'd be right there in the valley with me. I can confess this now because-you guessed it-I Ain't Me No More. Not only that, but because now I don't have a choice-it's all out there in this book...no stone unturned. Because the book mirrored my life so much (another Hence: the mirror on the cover;-) one might think it was easy to write this book. After all, it was my story. It should have flowed easily. That was not the case. I started writing this book five years ago. It was very difficult because my flesh kept rearing its ugly head. My flesh wanted to get out all of its hurt, pain, guilt, shame and 'woe is me' crap; you know, a three hundred page pity party that would hopefully make people feel sorry for me (ooops, I mean feel sorry for Helen). All the while God was trying to pull out a testimony, not garner sympathy. The flesh versus spiritual battle was very draining, but in the end I know beyond a doubt that what was achieved was a valid, entertaining, heart wrenching, moving and real story that will become a Divas classic.

What drew you to tackle the questions or topics in I Ain't Me No More? When I started this book five years ago, at the time, I was so displeased with who I was. The problem was, I didn't want to admit who I was, which was an angry, hurt and bitter person who had internalized and held onto those things, circumstances and situations that had made me that way. Doing so gave me an excuse to be mad. If I held onto what so and so did to me umpteen years ago, it justified the way I could treat so and so today. You can't quit it if you can't admit it. So I had to take a for real-for real look at myself in the mirror, tell that reflection staring back at me just what I thought about her, and once I turned away from that mirror, make a conscious decision to leave her behind. I declared that I would do everything in my power to not be that person anymore...because she was disgusting and I hated her. If you go through life hating who you are, displaying love to others (heck, even like for that matter) is next to impossible. I had dealt with so much hurt and pain in my life that it ultimately became my normal. So if you wanted to fit into my normal world, you had to bring the hurt, bring the pain. When I got into church and got saved, I thought I was fixed. I was still broken though. It takes more work than just showing up at church every week and running down to the altar for someone to touch and agree with you or lay hands on you to get fixed. The main character in I Ain't Me No More, Helen, is mad, bitter and angry at the hand she was dealt in life. Her problem; does she want to be fixed or is she so comfortable with pain that she wouldn't know how to live without it? Plain and simple: Helen is not that likeable. As a matter of fact, the last book I wrote, The Sunday Only Christian, the main character in that one wasn't so likeable either. So as God kept giving me these unlikable people as main characters, I got scared. As an author there was a fear that if readers didn't like my main character, then they wouldn't like my book. So during prayer I expressed to God my concerns. His reply: "This book is not for people to like the main character. This book is for people like the main character."

Which book did you find the hardest to birth?

My next release Someone Bad and Something Blue which releases in July 2012 was my hardest to write. My stories are pretty big as far as story plot points. Because it’s romantic adventure I have to accomplish two things in the story. When I wrote A Good Excuse to Be Bad I knew how the series would begin and end, but the stories in the middle that will drive the series I didn’t know what would happen there. On top of that my editor Selena wanted me to put a cliffhanger on the end of A Good Excuse to Be Bad. That cliffhanger was the catalyst for Book Two and Book Three, so connecting the dots was hard. I rewrote chapter one fifteen times. Each chapter was different from the first.

Which book is your current favorite?

I think most authors would say the book they are currently working on, because you grow as a writer. I love A Good Excuse to Be Bad. I love the idea of a feisty female lead who falls for the worst person at the worst time in her life and then have to honor her responsibilities as a young mom at the same time. This book has to be my favorite, because it’s what sold Kensington on the entire series. So I’m writing Book 3, which I need you all to help me with a title. It is messy, and Angel has put herself in a pickle that is so much fun and a bit scary to write.

How would you describe your writing style?

My writing style is a Catch 22. You either love it or you don’t. I write fast paced novels and I use pitch, diction, and sentence structure to accomplish that. Sometimes it comes across choppy, which is what I want. I want readers to feel the chaos and confusion of certain moments. The best way to do that is playing with sentence structure and pitch.

My writing influences are Chuck Palahniuk, Edgar Allan Poe, Thomas Hardy, Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Nella Larsen, Walter Mosley and Sydney Sheldon, so that should tell you my writing style is unique.

Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind?

I can’t write a scene unless I have the write music that fits the mood. I have a playlist for A Good Excuse To Be Bad you can hear on my Facebook Wall. Hit the Vevo Tab.

There is some rock music on there, Aaliyah is a major influence for Angel’s character. One Republic, Adele, Sade…it’s sensual, adult, not dirty, dark, uplifting. I am a Christian music publicist so I have from traditional gospel Mahalia Jackson to contemporary Christian Natalie Grant also on the playlist as well.

Tell us anything about you as a writer that you think might be interesting or unusual.

I wrote the argument scenes just after I had an argument with my boyfriend or my daughter’s father. I channel those emotions into my story. So if Angel is crying, than I was crying when I wrote it.

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

Surrender to your gift by becoming a better steward of your talent. Take writing classes to learn craft. Write every day to exercise the craft. Join writer’s groups to motivate, inspire and champion you when you don’t feel like it. Realize that as African Americans it was once illegal for us to read or write. In my state less than sixty years ago our grandparents had to leave school at sixth grade. It is a privilege to write and read. Let’s respect that and do those who died for our right to read and write proud. Let’s write the best stories that can both entertain and inspire our world.

Writers are often encouraged to write what they know. Have you found that to be the case with your writing?

No. No one wants to read a novel about German church architecture. Lol. That’s what I know like I know I have five fingers. I think you should write what keeps you up at night. That is what you know and your readers can relate to. Now the story that you pull together to address that nighttime haunt can be whatever makes you excited and happy about. Because you will have to spend many hours planted in a seat in front of a computer/laptop. If what excites you is a bail recovery agent hanging in Atlanta clubs then write about that. Just make sure that this bail recovery agent shares your heart.

I am a born-again believer, mother to two beautiful daughters, wife to a wonderful husband, avid reader and Christian fiction writer, and the owner of Toward the Mark Press, LLC, an advertising/design firm.

Tell us about your debut novel, Joy Comes In The Mourning.

Joy Comes in the Mourning follows the story of Tonya Monroe, a young woman who lost her mother at the hands of a drunk driver when she was only 14 years old. Tonya's tragedy was compounded by the revelation that a close family friend, Carolyn Wright, the novel's secondary character, was responsible. Now thirty, Tonya has worked hard to amass her assets: a dream home, a sweet job, a luxury car, and money in the bank. She has beauty, brains, and a body envied by women and adored by men. But what she hasn't had since the death of her mother is peace of mind.

Share why you chose to write about LUPUS.

I chose to write about Lupus to raise awareness. Although according to the Lupus Foundation of America, more than 1.5 million Americans have the life-threatening disease, I had absolutely no knowledge of its existence before my diagnosis in 2005. After experiencing first-hand the diseases ravishing health effects, I knew I would write a book. I wanted to use fiction to share the real struggles and challenges in the daily life of a lupus survivor.

What is the spiritual take away from this novel?

I want readers to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that ALL things truly do work together for good of them that love God and are called according to His purpose. God is a God of purpose, and even adversities are meant to strengthen His children. He can turn your mourning into joy...in spite of your circumstances. TRUST AND BELIEVE!

Share a little about your journey to publication.

Several years ago, I sent a manuscript to Denise Stinson with Walk Worthy Press and was told that it was not right for their list. However, she went on to say that she loved my writing style and imagination and would be very interested to see, upon completion, my second novel. Well, by the time I sent the second novel, Walk Worthy had lost their contract with a larger publisher and could not pick me up. I decided that if I was not picked up by a certain month, I would self-publish. One month before my deadline, I was offered a contract by my current publisher.

What was it like to hold your book in your hands for the first time?

I was ecstatic, but it didn't seem real! It wasn't until my book release party that it really hit me that my dream was truly reality.

If you had to go to a solitary place and could only take one Fiction novel, what would it be and why?

Wow! That's a hard one. While I love everything that Tiffany L. Warren has written, I would have to say Victoria Christopher Murray's Joy. After reading Joy, I recognized what my novel that was submitted to Walk Worthy Press was lacking - its foundation. That's when I was led to "do a new thing" and answer my call to write Christian fiction. I would take Joy because I am so encouraged by the story. The main character's love walk should be an example to us all.

I know you to be an avid fiction reader. What’s on your nightstand right now?

My nightstand is literally overflowing. My husband and I have a tradition. Every year for Mother's Day, I get to go book crazy and hit several book sales. Last year, I picked up more than 150 books. This year, I only found about 10 books of interest. One of them was Testimony by Felicia Mason, which I'm currently reading.

It seems like just yesterday Secrets and Lies was released and suddenly I was plunged into the world of being a published author. Exciting, exhilarating, exhausting ...all rewarding.

The first time I saw my novel in finished form it arrived at my house in a box with two others that I'd ordered from Barnes and Nobles.com. I knew what the cover looked like, but I didn't know what the final book would look like, feel like, the page count, all those details. So when it came and I held it, I had the answers to all those questions. I got on my knees and said, "I'm published." I cried. I thanked God. A life long dream had been fulfilled.

Well now I embark to cross over yet another threshold. The published get more published. My sophomore novel, An Inconvenient Friend will be released on August 1st. It's about one of the characters from Secrets and Lies and while it's not a sequel, I think the readers of Secrets and Lies will be very interested to find out where Samaria Jacobs turns up next. Here's a little about An Inconvenient Friend:

Kim you are an author who perhaps needs no introduction, but tell readers a little about yourself?
I am a New York Times bestselling author of eleven novels, two novellas and have a 14th book being released on January 19, 2010, entitled BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PRAY FOR. I began my career in 1995 when I wrote my first novel, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, and after being rejected by a plethora of literary agents and publishers, I started my own business in 1996 and self-published it. I then went on to sell just over 10,000 copies within the first six months of publication and before that, I signed with an agent and major publishing house for my second novel.

I’m a devoted fan, so I know A Deep Dark Secret is a very different novel for you. Tell us about it and what inspired the story? A DEEP DARK SECRET is a story about 12-year-old Jillian Maxwell who is a straight-A student, who does chores without being told and is basically the model child that any parent would be proud to have. But what no one knows, including her mother, is that she is harboring a devastating secret—what know one knows is that her stepfather, a beloved an upstanding deacon in the church, has been sexually molesting her for five years. I was inspired to write this story because while I didn’t experience exactly what Jillian experiences in the book, I do know full well what it is like to have an adult male touch me inappropriately when I was between the ages of six and eleven. I have also heard far too many similar stories from other women who were kind enough to share their histories with me.

Did you write the story with teenagers or adults in mind as the readers?Both. I wrote it for teenagers who may be current victims of sexual molestation but are afraid to tell and also for the 39 million adult Americans in this country who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

In your estimation or based on the research that you did for the novel, why do you think the secrecy of sexual abuse has so much power? It’s my belief that most children are afraid that no one will believe them if they tell what is happening to them, they sometimes blame themselves, and in many cases their abuser has lied and manipulated them on so many levels that they don’t see any other choice but to live with and deal with this horrible secret all alone.

When I closed A Deep Dark Secret I thought, “This is a very important book”, why is it important for you? It is important because not nearly enough people talk about it, and my hope is that Jillian’s story will bring about much more awareness and conversation, so that victims can finally get the help they need.

You’re writing two books a year now. How difficult is that with promotion?
Yes, this has been very different from when I was writing only one book a year! I don’t really feel that the promotional aspects are difficult, but it is very, very time-consuming. I’ve always been completely hands-on when it comes to marketing my work, but now my efforts have doubled. Interestingly enough, though, the promotion of my novels is something I really do enjoy being involved in daily.

Many authors aspire to make the New York Times Bestseller list, it’s not possible for all, but what are Kim Roby’s key marketing and promotion tools?Communicate with readers online and in person as much as you possibly can twelve months out of every year, build a street address mailing list, an online mailing list, interact and chat with your readers on Facebook regularly as well as on any other social network you might be a member of and do as many public signing and speaking events as you can—locally, regionally and nationally.

If you weren’t an author what would you be? Wow, that’s a good question! I would probably do something in the area of marketing or motivational consulting.
