Coming soon...It's Not About Him

Remember in December I had Michelle Sutton on the blog for her great book It's Not About Me. Well she's back with her new title, It's Not About Him.

Okay, so this is obviously not African-American Christian Fiction, and I just received a wonderful compliment from a reader about how my blog stays true to it's purpose, but I have to have Michelle on the blog. She's my friend and she's helped me soooooooo much. I love her. Plus she's a great writer. So I'm deviating. Just for today.

Susie wakes up after a party knowing something isn’t right. When she discovers she is pregnant but has no idea who the father is, she decides to place her baby for adoption with an infertile couple from church. Following through ends up being more challenging than she’d imagined. But she wants to do the right thing. If only Jeff would quit trying to marry her so she’ll keep her baby! Why doesn’t he understand? It’s not about him; it’s about what’s best for her child. Meanwhile, a man shows up in her life that looks irritatingly familiar. Could he be the father?

Jeff feels guilty. Someone took advantage of Susie when she passed out at his house—at his party—and she ends up pregnant. He offers to marry her so she won’t have to give up her baby, just like his birth mother had done with him. She refuses, saying he should he marry someone he loves. Because he is an adopted child, she believes he has unresolved issues that are influencing his decisions. His constant pursuit of her leads to rejection, which leads to further pursuit. Somehow he has to convince her that his love is genuine before it’s too late, but she’s not listening.

Can these friends find true love despite the horrible circumstances surrounding the unplanned pregnancy, or are they destined to remain “just friends”?

Introducing....Rhonda McKnight, Part I

I’m doing something different this Sunday. I’m going to talk about myself. Seems a little shallow, but I get so many emails asking me about myself, my upcoming book release, what I like to read that I decided it was time for me to introduce myself to the readers who visit Urban Christian Fiction Today (UCFT).

So, hello, I'm Rhonda McKnight, author, free-lance editor and your host here on UCFT blog.

First let me say, I really appreciate you taking time to read this blog. When I began blogging I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but people kept telling, blog and get an Internet presence. I knew this was important, but the idea of taking time to write blog post a few times a week was overwhelming. I mean, honestly, I write fiction, I write at work, write, write, write. I didn’t want to do it. So I prayed about it and one day I was at my doctor’s office waiting to be seen and I overheard someone on her cell phone telling a friend she wanted a good book for her daughter-in-law. It was her birthday and she wanted something that wasn’t filled with cussing or sex. I wanted to jump up and down screaming, I know just the right book! But I waited until she finished her phone conversation. I approached her and told her I overheard her talking, and offered her a brochure for Sherri Lewis’ book My Soul Cries Out. She read it and asked where she could get the book. I told her any bookstore, but then I remembered the copy I had in the trunk of my car and offered to get her one that was signed. (Great birthday gift right.) She purchased it of course, but told me she had never known black authors were writing Christian Fiction.

After my appointment, I decided to push Sherri’s book a little more, I handed brochures to the front desk staff. They quickly browsed, thanked me and told me they had never heard of Christian Fiction. As I walked out of the office I was troubled, because there are great Christian Fiction books coming out every day. That’s when the Holy Spirit said, “Promote the genre.” I knew in that instant what I would begin to blog about, and well here we are.

So now you know three things about me… 1) Why I started Urban Christian Fiction Today, 2) that I’m not shy, in fact I can be a little pushy and 3) I eavesdrop on other people’s phone conversations. More of my story to be continued on Wednesday…

What I'm Most Grateful For This Christmas

What I’m grateful for this Christmas is multi-faceted. I’ll begin with my immediate circle. My family is still healthy and we’re all together. My children are both excelling in their high school classes. God has provided for our needs and given my husband and I extra jobs when we need the additional income. My husband and I are more in love than ever. We’d weather some storms over the past few years but God has brought us through them. There is so much more I could say about my family but those are the highlights.

In regards to being an author, I am grateful that I had my first book in print this year and it has been very well-received, thank the Lord. Because of the edgy content I wasn’t sure how that would go, but the people have spoken and they want real fiction and not stuff that is unrealistically chipper. Real life hurts, but there is also healing in Christ. I love writing about those things that touch the hearts of everyone around me. And many non-Christians have discovered my book. I’m praising God for that, too, because I want so badly to reach the lost. God showed me this is one way to reach people who I would otherwise never meet.

I’ve also become Editor in Chief of Christian Fiction Online magazine and have had many talented columnists write articles since the debut issue in July. This month, Stacy Hawkins Adams will be providing food for thought in the multicultural fiction column, which is one of my favorite columns, so check it out y’all.
