A Review of Who Speaks To Your Heart: Tuning In To Hear God's Whispers

I’ll admit I’m not one who consistently uses a devotional in my private time with God, but that will no longer be the case. God has clearly anointed some of His people to bless us with accompaniments that stretch our spiritual muscles. Stacy Hawkins Adams is one of the anointed.

I have always enjoyed Stacy’s fiction, and most of her novels have bought me to the brink of tears at one point or another, but Who Speaks To Your Heart had me reaching for my tissue box as I saw myself in every chapter, on every page, in every word. I felt like this book was written for me. 

Ms. Hawkins Adams’ writing is simple and honest, yet powerful and vivid. Often times I felt like I was having a conversation with her and the Holy Spirit about my human weaknesses and fragilities. I felt Ms. Hawkins Adam’s desire for reader’s transformation literally leap off the pages. Her words, the learning to listen lessons and prayers were passionate and commanding, but the messages felt like whispers in your spirit that only the Holy Spirit could temper so gently.  

My heart was captured in the Introduction where the author used one of the scriptures that guides my very life. “In all things God works for the good of those who love HIM, who have been called according to HIS purpose.” Romans 8:28. She stated “Our role is to discipline ourselves to be real with God”; from there the tears and the soul searching learning continued, until I closed the back cover.

Who Speaks To Your Heart is proof that big things really can come in small packages.  Like the author herself, Who Speaks To Your Heart, is a small wonder that packs a big punch. Please don’t pass this book by and do remember to gift it to those you love.

Who Speaks To Your Heart - Blog Tour with Stacy Hawkins Adams - Day One

Hi, this is Stacy Hawkins Adams, author of Who Speaks To Your Heart? Tuning in to Hear God’s Whispers.

Here’s a question you may never have asked yourself : Who is speaking to my heart? Who is speaking to my heart? Is it my parents? My spouse? My boss? Is it a friend or an enemy? Is it God?

I’m guessing that all of the above could be true, but amid the chatter, or what I like to call “incoming traffic” from your fellow mortals, make sure you are keeping the door to your heart open for the One whose words matters most.

We can’t ignore the instructions, guidance, requests and pleas of our loved ones or our earthly leaders, and the Bible instructs us not to do that. However, amid the clamor of their demands, we need to find a way, and make the time, to be still and open, so that when God taps on our heart’s door, we’ll be prepared to receive Him and embrace His truths and His love. 

When we allow God to speak to our hearts, our quest for happiness is replaced by a joy that only He can provide. Our longing for direction is satisfied with His divine guidance. Our need for affirmation and love is covered by his grace and mercy.

The more courage we muster to slow down and truly listen, the more we can hear him speaking through others, through signs and into our very spirits.

In Jeremiah 29:11-12, God reminds His prophet (and us) that He already knows what’s in store for us. All we must do is follow where He’s leading. We can stay on the right path, or get back on track, by looking for Him and listening for Him every day.

Meditate on this Scripture, then ask yourself, What does God want me to give up so I can grow closer to Him?

If I let go of the things that I know aren’t good for me, what’s the worst that can  happen? What is the best? 

Ask yourself these questions, then listen as God speaks to your heart.

Sibling Rivalry

Building on the characters she created in the prior two novels, The Someday List and Worth A Thousand Words, author Stacy Hawkins Adams introduces a new progression in the Burns family drama, Dreams That Won’t Let Go. The third installment of the Jublilant Soul series did not disappoint. It is definitely a novel that could be read without having to go back and read the prior two, but honestly, they’re great books, so I say why not read them all?

In Dreams That Won’t Let Go, we meet up with the ugly twins jealousy and envy amongst sister and brother. Sibling rivalry always makes for a juicy read, especially when it’s written by someone as talented as Ms. Hawkins Adams.

Indigo Burns is engaged to be married and would be enjoying the preparations if her prodigal brother, Reuben had not returned home, and how dare he decide to stay. Reuben Burns is a looking for a safe place to heal but struggles with his personal demons and failures. Indigo loves her brother, but resents him a great deal at the same time. This was apparent from page one and did not let up until almost the end of the story. Indigo really had to grow to get to the place where she could help him. Likewise Reuben had to grow in order to help himself. The themes of family resilience, love and faith were addressed realistically and thoughtfully. Ms. Hawkins Adams did a wonderful job of illustrating the pain and frustration of family tension in the midst of a huge faith challenge. I loved the resolution to the issues the characters had.

The strength of the novel was the emotional intensity and various plot twist that will definitely keep the reader turning the pages. I highly recommend this novel.

How did you choose the name for this book series?

The Jubilant Soul series is named for the fictional setting for the three novels in the series – Jubilant, Texas. Jubilant is a metaphor for happiness, and for the reality that many of us routinely search for happiness and contentment “somewhere” else, rather than looking within. That’s what each of the main characters in this series finds themselves doing.

Tell us briefly about each book in the Jubilant Soul series.

The first book in the series is “The Someday List.” This novel features Rachelle Covington, a stay-at-home mother of two and wife of a prominent surgeon. On the surface, life looks picture perfect; but Rachelle finds the courage to accept that she’s simply been going through the motions. A friend challenges her to make a list of goals or dreams that she’d like to someday accomplish, and when Rachelle can’t get past No. 1 on the list, she knows she needs to reclaim her life. A summer visit to her aunt and uncle’s place in Jubilant, Texas helps.

Book Two in the series is “Worth a Thousand Words.” This novel focuses on Indigo Burns, the younger cousin of Rachelle, whom readers meet a few days after her college graduation. Indigo is pretty and smart and has a promising future. She has her life mapped out to the T, but the summer she spends at home before heading off to grad school throws her for a loop. She’s faced with tough choices that will determine the kind of woman she’ll mature into and whether she’ll live to please others or honor the truths in her heart.

Book Three is titled “Dreams That Won’t Let Go.” The novel opens with Indigo expressing frustration over her brother Reuben’s return to the family (similar to the Prodigal Son story); however, the book is mostly about Reuben’s return Jubilant in an effort to smother demons from his past. While he and Indigo dance around their hopes and dreams, their younger sister Yasmin decides to realize hers, regardless of the cost. This book shows the bonds between members of a family and how secrets can often hurt more than they heal.

Quite a few of your characters are in all three books. Do you have a process for remembering details for each character?

Yes, I wrote what I call character sketches about each pivotal character, and referred to it while writing each novel in the series. It might contain the character’s full name, birth order, month and year of birth, likes and dislikes, etc. I can do my best to make those facts line up in each of the books in the series.

Can readers read a book in this series out of order? For example, if they desire to read Dreams That Won’t Let Go, would you recommend they read the first two books first?

Although the books are part of a series, each of the novels, features a different main character, and a different plot; so readers are free to start in whatever order they prefer. They won’t be lost or feel like there are gaps in the story.

Do you have a favorite character from the series?

Yes – like many readers of the series, I love Aunt Melba! She’s the single, older aunt of Rachelle, and great aunt of Indigo, Reuben and Yasmin. She owns Hair Pizzazz, a salon in Jubilant, that serves as a sanctuary of sorts, a place where Aunt Melba’s clients and her family can come for no-nonsense, loving advice. I love this character so much that I’m doing a hair salon book tour in “honor” of what she represents.

What were some lessons you personally learned from developing the characters in this series?

This is a great question, but a tough one! As a writer yourself, Rhonda, you know how the characters often “take over” and begin to tell their story through you. That happened often with this book, and in the process, I learned, or more accurately I was reminded, that God gives us our dreams for His own purposes – sometimes to grow us up, sometimes to bless us so we can bless others, and sometimes to help others pursue their purpose.

What lessons do you want readers to come away with after reading the last book in the series, Dreams That Won’t Let Go?

I’d like readers to come away with several messages: 1) If God gives us a dream, He will bless it in His own way and in his own time; 2) God doesn’t call us to control each other, but to learn how to love unconditionally; and 3) Sometimes the independent perspective of a third party (a minister, a counselor, a trusted friend) can help us heal and grow.

Book Review - Worth A Thousand Words by Stacy Hawkins Adamas

Life at a crossroads?

Indigo just graduated from college with honors and has been accepted into grad school in the Fall. She has big dreams and a bright future ahead of her. Her handsome fiancé has dreams of his own; he’s working to be a Navy fighter pilot.

Can they both pursue their personal dreams hundreds of miles apart and still be together? They find the road to fulfilling one’s goals is not always a straight one, even when love should seem to carve a path. Unexpected things happen and decisions have to be made by all the characters.

I enjoyed this book because I think we live in uncertain times. Many of us know people who are wrestling with decisions they never thought they’d have to make about their finances, families and careers, so it’s timely. Stacy Hawkins Adams has done a wonderful job at bringing that reality home. The lessons of hope and faith are not wasted in this beautifully written, inspiring novel.

Like Book 1 in the Jubilant Soul Series, The Someday List, Worth A Thousand Words is an absolute must read. EXCERPT

Indigo Burns peered over the balcony at the crowd that had gathered in the courtyard below to celebrate her achievement and her brief homecoming. "Brief," if that's what one could call the next four months. In a town the size of Jubilant, seventeen weeks could feel like sixty, especially after being away for four years, pursuing your dreams.

"This day is perfect," she said, surveying the colorful variety of flowers that bathed the grounds of Jubilant Botanical Garden."I feel like God is giving me a thumbs-up and sealing it with a kiss."

Brian tweaked her nose with his thumb and forefinger. " Then I guess you don't need mine, huh?"

She chuckled and raised her head so his lips could easily reach hers.

Brian delivered the smooch with a smile and she returned the gesture. She laid her head on his chest and closed her eyes.

This man was another special gift.

Without consulting one another, each had come to the party wearing tan linen outfits and brown leather sandals, although his shoes were flat and hers bore two-inch heels.

"How does it feel to be a college graduate?" he asked. "A summa cum laude one, at that?"

Indigo squeezed his waist. "Feels good, babe. I'm excited about the next chapter."

He wrapped his deep brown arms around her, and they both turned their attention back to her friends and family milling about below. The intimate group laughed and chatted as they enjoyed seafood and barbecue and browsed through scrapbooks filled with photos from her childhood. Along with snatches of conversation, the scent of fried catfish and basting ribs wafted upward, and Indigo felt herself growing hungry again.

Young and old guests were dancing to some of her favorite old school R&B and hip-hop grooves. At one end of the patio, Brian's parents swayed in sync, tucking their round bodies into each other's like matching puzzle pieces. They had surprised Indigo by driving the two hours from Austin to attend the party.

A few feet away, her mom and dad sashayed to the riffs of Chaka Khan, a half second offbeat as always. And holding center court were Indigo's cousins Rachelle and Gabe. Indigo smiled as she watched the tall, lean couple move in close and pull away at the beckoning of the beat. Their eyes remained locked, and at one point, Gabe lowered his head and savored a kiss from his wife.

Indigo blushed and instinctively framed the picture in her mind. If she weren't locked in Brian's embrace right now, she'd grab one of her cameras to capture this miracle. Those two clearly didn't need words to let the family know their marriage was back on track.

The song ended, and before the DJ could start another, one of Indigo's aunts climbed the steps to a small stage adjacent the patio. Indigo's best friend followed on Aunt Melba's heels. A bed of multicolored tulips and roses served as their backdrop.

Each of the women grabbed a microphone from its stand, and Aunt Melba shushed the crowd by tapping hers. She pointed in Indigo's direction.

"That's where they're hiding," she said into the mic. Everyone looked toward the balcony and laughed. "Brian, will you please escort the guest of honor to the stage?"

In jest, Brian saluted Aunt Melba. He held out his arm so Indigo could tuck hers inside, and they descended the curved stone stairwell. A minute later, Indigo was facing her guests.

Wearing a smile that showcased her perfect teeth, she slid between Aunt Melba and Shelby and waved at her cheering loved ones.

We're in perfect position for a photo shoot. She chuckled inwardly.

One of the companies she had interned with a few years agowas always looking for catalog models of different shades and sizes. Today, the three of them would have been hired at their asking prices-Indigo with toffee skin and a thin bone structure that gave her jaw and cheekbones prominent angles; Aunt Melba with her bronze complexion, full red lips, and thick hips; and Shelby, a dark chocolate Hershey's kiss, whose smooth skin and curves made her eligible for Barbie-doll status.

"Aw, y'all really love me!" Indigo said in response to the lingering applause. Her eyes moistened as she scanned their faces. There was her great aunt Margaret, now ninety and wheelchair bound; her childhood babysitter, Sheila; the leader of her Girl Scout troop, Mrs. Jones; and her favorite instructor ever, eleventh grade humanities teacher Mrs. Hutton.

Thank you, God, for this day.

Shelby opened her palm and revealed the tissue she had tucked inside. She passed it to Indigo.

"Any of us who know this girl well knew this would happen,"Shelby teased. "We haven't said a word about her yet, and she's acting like the Grammy is hers."
Indigo swatted Shelby's arm.

"Seriously though," Shelby said, "it's an honor to be here to celebrate Indigo Irene Burns. For those of you who don't know, I'm Shelby Arrington, Indigo's friend and sister in spirit. We met at Tuskegee University our sophomore year and graduated together yesterday."

Aunt Melba waved. "If any of you don't know me, you better ask somebody!"

The guests roared.

Indigo shook her head. Aunt Melba was always trying to be hip.

I am Indigo's favorite aunt and one of her biggest fans," Melba said. "Indigo graduated with honors yesterday, with a 3.9 GPA. She has received a partial scholarship to a prestigious school in New York City, and she'll move there in August to get her master's in digital photography."

She's going to tell us what her summer plans are in a few moments, but her long-term goal is to become as good as, if not better than, some of America's most famous photographers."

Shelby continued the introduction. "She wants to shoot fine art images for magazines and museums and maybe even still-life for movies. The awesome thing about Indigo is that, not only does she want to do these things, being the person she is, she'll get them done."

She turned toward Indigo. "Indie, we wish you much success and Godspeed on your journey. And when you hit it big, I'll be your 'Gail.' If Oprah can have a 'ride or die' girlfriend, you can too!"

Indigo hugged Aunt Melba and Shelby and took Shelby's microphone. The women stepped aside to give Indigo center stage. She thanked everyone for coming and for supporting her over the years.

"Now, to my parents," Indigo said and shook her head. "I can't say enough. They gave me a camera that used 35 mm film when I was ten. Remember those? I took so many pictures that at some point they began upgrading me to a better model every Christmas."

They've always believed in me and supported me, even when it meant they had to sacrifice something else. They have taught me, and shown me, that with God and personal grit, there's nothing I can't accomplish. Anything that I've achieved so far, or will achieve-I share those accolades with you, Mama and Daddy. I love you."

Indigo dabbed her eyes with the tissue again and searched the crowd."

Where are Rachelle and Gabe?" she asked.

The couple waved from their seats, in the last row of black folding chairs positioned near the stage. Their teenage son and daughter sat next to them.

"Rachelle, you're a cousin who's more like a big sister, and I appreciate you for that," Indigo said. "Thanks to both of you for giving me this party at this beautiful place. Our usual backyard barbecue was all I had in mind. You're so good to me!"

Gabe stood up and blew her a kiss. "Remember this day when you're rich and famous and I need a loan!"

Indigo raised an eyebrow and laughed. "Okay, Doctor Covington," she said. Just about everyone there knew Gabe was one of the top heart surgeons in the nation and wouldn't need her financial help anytime soon.

"Tell them what you'll be doing this summer," Aunt Melba reminded her.

"I will be interning at the Jubilant Herald for ten weeks," Indigo said. "My long-term interest isn't photojournalism, but I'll get to add a range of shots to my portfolio before I head to grad school. Plus, it will be great to spend the summer at home."

Brian approached Indigo and put an arm around her waist."No men on the stage!" Shelby teased.

Brian winked at her."Hey, everybody," he said in his husky, laid-back drawl, skipping the self-introduction. "I just want to say that I'm very proud of Indigo. We met at Tuskegee when she was a sophomore and I was a senior." Brian looked in Shelby's direction. "Our friend over there introduced us, and within half an hour of talking to Miss Indigo, I knew she was special," Brian said. "She hasn't proved me wrong. She has big plans for the future, and I'm praying that I'll be part of them."

Indigo felt tears surfacing again. Brian had never been much of a romantic; this overt show of affection surprised her. Then he knelt on one knee. She stopped breathing.

"Indigo, if you'll take this ring, and agree to become Mrs. Harper, you'll make me the happiest man in the world. Will you marry me?"

Indigo stared at Brian and tried to process what she'd heard. Did he just propose? In front of everyone she knew? Had this man forgotten that he'd be leaving in a few weeks for the Navy's Officer Candidate School, with plans to become a pilot?

Countless emotions engulfed Indigo, from love and gratitude to a tidal wave of fear. Suddenly she felt her stomach churning.

Please, God, no. Not now. Not here. As much as she loved Brian, becoming his wife wasn't in her immediate plans. Neither was giving up her first choice grad school.

"I love you too, Brian," she said weakly, hoping her grin effectively masked her mental wrestling match. How could she say no to this fine, smart brother, who had a bright future ahead of him and happened to be crazy about her?

She couldn't. Not in front of all these people. God forgive me."Yes-I'll marry you!" she told Brian.

She flung her arms around his neck and let the tears fall. She did love him, and she did want to be his wife. Just not now-before she, and her dreams, had a chance to blossom.

Blog Tour - Day 1 - Meet Stacy Hawkins Adams

Today we welcome author, Stacy Hawkins Adams on the first stop of her Blog Tour for her new novel, The Someday List. Stacy is truly one of my favorite authors. I was so moved by Micah, the male character in her first novel that I named my son after him. (No kidding.)

Welcome Stacy. Tell us about yourself.
I'm a wife and mother of two. I grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas and was always an avid reader and writer. I decided in high school to pursue journalism as a career and after obtaining a degree in mass communications, worked for newspapers in Florida and Virginia. I never stopped loving fiction, though. My first novel was published in 2004. These days, along with penning books, I serve as an inspirational speaker, freelance writer and marketing consultant.

What type of jobs or careers have you worked in the past? I've always been a writer! My college internships were at newspapers around the country, including The Albuquerque Tribune and USA Today. My first job was as a general assignment reporter at Florida Today. I left there to join the staff of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, where I spent a dozen years writing in various capacities - courts reporter, social issues reporter and eventually spirituality columnist. For a while, I also delivered live reports from the Times-Dispatch newsroom on the local CBS affiliate's 11 p.m. news broadcast.When did you begin to realize you wanted to write?My 10-year-old daughter asked me this question the other day and was amazed when I told her around 'first grade.' It's the truth, though. I was very shy at that age, and often lost myself in the world of books. I soon began cranking out poems and short stories, and my family was surprised by how well they read. My eldest sister would take the pieces I produced, type them up and staple them together in what she called a 'book.' I guess the seeds were planted then. Everyone I knew - from my family to my teachers to my friends - would ask me to write something for them. Their enthusiasm encouraged me, and I just kept at it. As a fellow writer, Rhonda, I'm sure you know what it feels like to have to write something that's burning inside you. That's how it has always been for me, whether it's fiction or nonfiction.

Tell us about your journey to publication. My road to publication actually began through a journalism connection. I had written a newspaper column about a Richmond woman who operated a faith-based ministry for women in her home, and it was picked up by a freelancer for Today's Christian Woman. An acquisitions editor for Revell Books read that version of the story and contacted the woman I had featured to ask her for a book proposal. He asked if she knew any writers who could help her, and she recommended me. I helped her with her proposal, and during that process, the editor asked to see my fiction and nonfiction work. I had been working on my first novel, Speak To My Heart, off and on for three years. I pulled it off the shelf and sent it to him, and several months later, he called to discuss a publishing deal.

Are you a full-time writer? If so, describe your day? Yes, I'm a full-time writer, but not all of my writing-related work centers around my novels. I typically rise in the mornings between 4:30-5 a.m. and work on my fiction for about two hours. That's when I seem to be the most creative, and my mind hasn't been filled with the clutter of a busy day.After I get my kids off to school, my schedule varies, depending on whether I'm working on my parenting column or other freelance assignments, or assisting one of my nonprofit marketing clients. I write the bulk of the published material for two Richmond-based charities, from drafting their volunteer manuals and press releases to creating brochures and producing electronic newsletters.At the end of the day, after trying my best to catch up on emails and participate in various social media (I'm trying to do a better job of this!), I'll revisit my fiction and tweak the storyline or something about the characters or setting. When I'm on deadline for a manuscript, this schedule is completely altered, and I go into what I call my "cave," which is really a mindset, where I set aside emails, extracurricular activities, etc., and spend eight to 12 hours a day cranking out a draft of the book.

What is your biggest accomplishment to date? I still very much view my writing career as a work in progress, but I was honored to have my third novel, Watercolored Pearls, place second in the American Christian Fiction Writer's 2008 Book of the Year Contest, and to have a collaborative project, the anthology This Far By Faith, win first place in the 2008 African American Literary Awards Show anthology category. However, I honestly have to say the biggest accomplishment so far has been knowing that the fictional characters I've been given the inspiration to create have truly made a difference for readers. It's humbling to hear from people across the country - a woman who was contemplating suicide until she read Speak To My Heart; a medical student who landed a prestigious fellowship after being inspired by Watercolored Pearls to pursue her dreams; a wife and mother I know well who told me months after Nothing But the Right Thing was published that this book had given her the courage to leave her abusive spouse.Those are results I couldn't pay for, and every time I hear from readers with stories to share, I'm reminded of what I heard a fellow author say at a writer's conference about 18 months ago: When a book is "born," that means the person God ordained it for is ready to read it.

Stacy, we've learned quite a bit about you today. To close out this part of your interview, do you have a favorite bible verse and or quote you wish to share?Rhonda, it has been a pleasure to be your guest! Thanks so much for allowing me to share more about myself with your readers. Different verses have sustained me at different
periods in my life. Psalm 62:1- My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him has been the most recent. On New Year's Eve, however, I flipped open my Bible and was led to a familiar passage that will serve as my guide for 2009: Habakkuk 2:2,3- Then the Lord replied: Write down the revelation and make it on plain tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.
