The oldest of the Danjuma brothers, Rasheed was a self-made man. He’d learned at an early age that love and commitment brought with it complications he didn’t want to deal with. His single-minded focus had paid off. He was able to step into the shoes of his absentee father by taking care of his mother and twin brothers. But just when he thought he could stop carrying the weight of his family on his shoulders, he gets a call that could change the trajectory of Rasheed’s life. Ibiso Jaja, a professional caterer, had gambled on the love of a man and lost. Through the redeeming love of God, she had picked herself up and was now living her dream as the owner of Bisso Bites, a bistro in the heart of Abuja. However circumstances conspire to threaten the bistro and bring her face to face with the type of man she has vowed to avoid. The attraction is instant. Once again, Rasheed is forced to do something he has done all his life – put the needs of his family ahead of his own. This time however, he crosses path with the sassy, independent, Jesus-loving caterer who is bent on making him see the power of forgiveness and God’s love. Just when Rasheed lets his guard down, a deadly sabotage causes old demons to rise. Will Rasheed continue to pursue power and success or surrender to the light of God’s love?

Breaking All The Rules - An Excerpt

Deniece Malcolm’s baby sister is marrying her ex, even though she knows there’s a rule about dating exes. Rules are made to be broken right? Deniece doesn’t think so, but she’ll help with the wedding and break a few of her own.

I've posted other excerpts from Breaking and I always begin at Chapter 1 of any project I have because well doesn't it need to be good from the first word? I think so. Anyway, today I decided to pop around and I pulled an excerpt out of chapter 5. Deneice Malcolm, our heroine, has a rule about dating younger men, but our hero, Ethan Wright is becoming pretty irresistible.

An excerpt from Chapter 5
 I felt a stabbing pain in my heart. I’d dubbed myself Mrs. Terrance Wright in high school and now my sister would have the title. I sighed. This was too weird.
I lie on the bed for a few minutes listening to my sister move around downstairs, then outside and eventually heard her car start and pull away. I had yet to ask her where she and Mr. Terrance Wright were planning to live. This house was bigger than the one Terrance owned or rented or whatever was his situation. I’d been afraid to ask her, not wanting to learn that that they would reside here and raise their babies in this house, because if they did it would no longer feel like home.
I rolled over on my stomach and pressed my made-up face into the comforter. I just didn’t know. Everything about her choice of husband made the marriage difficult for me to stomach. Of course she hadn’t been thinking about that when she’d gone out and slept with him. I groaned. Now I knew for sure why you stayed away from the exes.  I’d never really thought about the implications of it before. I just knew to follow the rule. Whomever had made it had to be a woman that had been through this “ish”, because only someone who had been where I was could possibly understand all the factors that could come into play when someone close to you dated an ex.
I stood and surveyed myself one more time in the mirror. The makeup made me look like I was going on a date. I couldn’t have Ethan thinking I was going to break my “no dating younger men” rule. There was enough rule breaking going on right now. Besides, he was Terrance’s cousin, dating me would mean he was with Terrance’s ex. Did men care about that? I wasn’t sure.
“Why are you even going there in your mind?” I asked my reflection. “Ethan is a friend and he wouldn’t ever be anything more.” I walked into the bathroom that joined my bedroom to my sisters and washed the makeup off my face, reapplied my moisturizer and a little lip gloss just as the doorbell rang. I turned to leave the room and then turned back to the mirror and pointed at myself. “Ethan is just a friend,” I repeated. “He’s twenty-nine, Terrance’s cousin, and he appears to be backslidden. They’ll be no opening your mouth tonight.”

I turned off the light and made my way down the stairs. I pulled the door open and all that I’d just told myself seemed to evaporate into a mist in the sky. Ethan was standing there looking all kinds of yummy and chocolaty. Once that woodsy scent coming off his body hit my nostrils all I could think was that I wanted to break every rule I had ever made.

Excerpt
           “Stop preaching to me. I don’t want to hear it anymore. I’ve had enough of your self-righteousness.” The words continued to cut Jordan’s heart; words that she never heard before coming from the mouth of her husband, Eric. “You knew how I was before we got married.”  His tone deepened with every word.
            Standing in front of the sink, Jordan was frozen and motionless in the middle of the kitchen. She held the dish towel in one hand and a plate in the other. She turned and faced Eric, whose eyes were cold and hard.  The verbal blows kept coming.  Her mouth opened wide, but no words could be formed when he uttered the deadly words, “I want a divorce.”

Breaking All The Rules on Pinterest

I love Pinterest. I find it very relaxing to pin things to a board. I'm a bit of a collector and Pinterest is the perfect way to gather up stuff without actually having to make room for it. :) And don't get me started on the food porn..

Anyway, I created a board for the novel, Breaking All The Rules, but it wasn't on purpose. I usually print pictures and hang them up in my office as inspiration while I write. Well, I write everywhere now...at Starbucks, during lunch, in the car, etc. I decided to save ink and make my inspiration board accessible to me wherever I was, so I started pinning. Once I was finished I thought it would be nice to share with my readers. I had no idea other authors were making board.  A few of my readers joined in with pins of their own and made it more fun.

Please pop over, take a look and let me know what you think. Follow me too. I'll follow back, especially if you have pictures of food. :)

Love On A Budget by Norma L. Jarrett

About the Book

Jake Jiles was always handy with tools. Despite his love for all things do-it-yourself, he went to college and majored in business to fulfill his parents’ dream. He finally got the courage to leave his corporate job and start his “Honey-Do-4-Hire” business. Less than a year in, he’s already exhausted his savings and still living at home with his mother, but he’s determined to birth his franchise. Consumed with his business and fresh off a breakup, he wasn’t in the market for Mrs. Right. But after completing a job on Valentine’s Day, his potential dream girl, Sky showed up. After a brief chat over her car dilemma, he ignored the chemistry and left without her number. But cupid and God had other plans. After a divine connection, the only thing that stood between Jake and Sky, were funds. Will Jake pursue “Love on a Budget” or miss out because the price is too high?

Chapter 13 – Distressed Damsels
            Jake said a mental thank you for the truck’s navigation system and pulled over on the side of the road.  So much for relaxation, duty calls.  He walked up to the door and heard a few women laughing loud.  He had on his work pants, Honey-Do-4-Hire logo shirt, cap and boots and carried a small tool box.  The door opened before he could knock.
            “Um, you must be Mr. Honey-Do.”  Yasmine was standing there with a drink, in heels, a mini skirt, crop top and a feather boa around her neck.
            “Yes, I guess that would be me.  May I come in?”
            “Girl, get out the way and let the man in.”  Jake heard a voice from the back.
            Yasmine turned around, “Meeka, hush. I was the one who called. I’m the damsel in distress.” She extended her hand. “Yasmine Nash.”
He reached out his free hand and shook hers. “Jake… Jiles.”
She smiled then sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes at Meeka.  “Please come in.  The kitchen’s this way.”  She walked slow and put her heels to work as her black mini swung from side to side.  Jake kept his eyes forward and did a mental eye roll.
            “Um, um.  That thang right there.” Meeka said aloud, not caring that Jake heard.  “Dang, let me go break something.” She crunched on a carrot stick then licked her pink lips.
            By this time Bree, Yasmine’s other friend had arrived and was sitting in the living room with her legs crossed, unfazed.
            “It’s the garbage disposal.” Yasmine said as she pushed Meeka out the way.
            “You mind?”  Jake made sure the switch was off, then knelt down with his flashlight.  “Just a minute…I need to slide under here.” He pushed the reset button and nothing happened.  “Seems like something fell in and jammed it.” He slid back out and stood up.  “Let me see…” He put on some rubber gloves and grabbed a few tools from his box.  He slid back under the sink. He unscrewed a few parts and knocked around.  Finally he was able to dislodge the culprit—a chewed up dish cloth as he emerged from beneath the sink.
            “Ugh, that’s disgusting.” Meeka frowned.
            “Uh, I know you ain’t talking with your non-housekeeping self.  This is the thanks I get for planning this fabulous soiree for your lonely-no-man-having—”
            “Ladies, ladies, um don’t mean to interrupt, but I have another job after this.”
He walked over and placed the dishrag in the trash.  “Do you mind if I go wash my hands? We can wrap it up when I come back.”
            “No, not at all.”  Yasmine said.
            When he left to go to the restroom he heard loud whispers.
            “Gurl, I’mma ask him.  What woman would let a man that fine work on Valentine’s Day? If that were my Boo, huh, I’d serve him breakfast and spend all day with him.” Meeka dipped the ladle in the punch bowl and poured some in her cup.
            When he opened the door to come out he started to write up the bill.
            “Yoo-hoo, Mr. Honey-Do?  I know you gots to have a woman.  A man Boris-Kodjoe, Idris-Elba fine?”  Meeka’s ponytail whipped in animation as her neck moved with her words.
            He smiled. “I’m flattered. Don’t mean to be rude, but I really do have to go.”   Jake flashed his smile again, hoping they’d be satisfied with that.
            “Yeah, we know the real reason you rushing off.  You got a woman.” Yasmine said, batting her extra long lashes. She signed off on the bill and paid him.
            “Appreciate it,” he said, ignoring their inquiries. “Okay, ladies, enjoy the rest of your evening.  If you need anything else, you have my information.”
            “Anything?” Meeka said, fanning herself. She watched him until he left out the door.
~~~~~
As Jake stepped outside and rushed out to the driveway, he noticed a woman that was seated inside her car fumbling with the door. She was visibly frustrated and talking to herself. “I can’t believe I just did this. Ugh!”  She opened the door wide and jiggled a latch.
Jake walked toward her. “Excuse me, miss, you okay?  Need some help?”
She sucked her teeth. “I did the most stupid thing. So like me,” she said, focused on her lock.
“What happened?   Can I take a look at it?” he asked, concerned.
She finally stopped to focus on Jake.  Her eyes moved from his work boots, to his jeans, to his arms bulging from his work shirt, then to his handsome face.  Then she saw the logo. “Honey-Do-4-Hire?” She chuckled.
“Look, I’m not the one needing help.” He wasn’t laughing.
She raised her finger. “I guess you’re right.”  For a few seconds their eyes connected.  She couldn’t help but notice his milk brown skin and iridescent eyes. She was caught off guard by how handsome he was, but she didn’t let on.
 “C’mon, let me check it out.  What happened?”  He knelt down to look at the side of the door.
 “Well, I was rushing trying to get over here. Yasmine always nags about being on time. I wasn’t even gonna come.  I was all set for my movie marathon. But nooo, she started whining.  Anyway, I stopped at the grocery store and slammed my seat belt in the car door.  I had to hold the door closed on the way here. Thank God it was less than a mile.  This is gonna cost me some money.  The electronic door lock isn’t working.”
As she sat there explaining, he took in her face. He loved the way her short layered cut highlighted her high cheekbones.  As she spoke, her long eyelashes bounced every few seconds.  Her skin is so smooth.  Jake quickly focused, “Okay, stay calm.  If you step out I can get in to get a better look.”
She turned her body so she could step out. Jake tried not focus too hard on her athletic body.  She was casually chic in jeans, a white top and high heel boots with a scarf wrapped loosely around her neck.
He placed his tool box next to the door. He eased in the driver’s seat and immediately went into damage control.  He reached down in the box to grab a small metal tool and jiggled the area where the door closed.  He jumped back out.  “Okay, there’s good news and bad news.”
“I figured,” she said, folding her arms. She bit the side of her baby pink glossed lip.
Jake watched her eyes widen. “The good news?  I fixed it so you can at least close and lock your door manually. The bad news…you’re gonna need some electrical work on the lock. Off to the dealer you go. ”
She took a deep breath.  “Ugh. Between maintenance and super unleaded gas, this car has cost me some money.”
            He grinned and shrugged his shoulders. “Sorry I couldn’t do more.”
            She smiled warmly, her teeth sparkling like the diamond studs in her ears. “No worries, at least you tried.  So what’s this gonna cost me?”
            “You’re joking, right?  I barely did anything.”
            “Well, chivalry isn’t dead after all.” She raised her neatly arched eyebrows.            “There’s still a few of us out here.” Jake grabbed his box.
            She stuck out her hand, “Thanks, um…”
            He pulled the side of his shirt where his name was embroidered.
            “Jake,”
            He grabbed her hand, “You’re quite welcome…”
            “Skylar, Skylar Ross.”
E-book coming soon from Rhonda McKnight...
Some rules are made to be broken…
About the Book
Deniece Malcolm is shocked and heartbroken when she finds out her baby sister, Janette, is marrying Terrance Wright, because she was the one who was supposed to marry him! Everybody knows there’s a rule about dating exes. Janette is pregnant and not only is this wedding happening, but Deniece has to arrange the festivities.
Deniece’s feelings and pride are hurt, but surprisingly, Terrance’s younger, sexier, cousin, Ethan Wright, is there to provide a listening ear and a strong bicep to cry on. Ethan’s interested in Deniece, but she has a rule about dating younger men. Despite her resistance, things heat up between them and Deniece begins to wonder if it’s time to break a few rules of her own.
The First Chapter -
I know I hadn't heard this heifer correctly. Her statement almost made me drop my brand new seven hundred dollar phone in the toilet. I pulled it away from my ear, set it on the knee wall next to me and pushed the speaker button.
“I know you’re probably shocked, but I’m so happy I could cry!”
I closed my eyes to the sound of her voice. She hadn't said what I thought she’d said. She hadn’t said she was marrying Terrance Wright. She couldn’t have said that.
“Deniece, I know you’re still there. I can hear those stupid wind chimes in your bathroom window.”
I peeked over my shoulder at the noisy ornament that had betrayed me and smirked. Even though she knew I was present, I considered pushing the end button and pretending the call had dropped. But I knew there was no point in doing that. My pesky sister would only call back until I answered.
I swallowed, lowered the toilet seat lid and plopped my “needed to lose twenty pounds” behind down. “I’m here,” I croaked like I’d sucked in a room full of dry air.
“I know you’re surprised and all, because who would have thought I’d be interested in your leftovers, but it’s a long story how we got to know each other and although I feel kind of bad that he’s kinda ex-ish for you, I can’t help but be happy because I’ve found the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.”
I shook my head. This was crazy. Way out there for a pre-coffee conversation. Kind of ex-ish? Had my sister lost her mind?
“He proposed last night. I was going to call you when I got home but it was close to midnight and I can never remember if you’re in a different time zone.”
I rolled my eyes. “New York is on the east coast just like you are, Janette, but I was asleep at midnight so I appreciate you holding off on your news,” I refused to say good, “until this morning.”
“I have so much to do. I need your help like yesterday. Do you think we could talk about some wedding stuff?”
I stared at the phone, tempted once again to push the end button and disconnect the call. “No, boo.  I’m not even dressed and I have an appointment to get to, so I most definitely can’t talk about this right now. I’ll call you later.”
“Wait!” Janette shrieked. “There’s one more thing. I need a favor.”
My baby sister was and had always been oblivious to my feelings. It would never occur to her to ask, “Are you okay with me marrying the only guy you have ever loved?”
I swallowed again. This lump went down harder than the last one, because it was a knot full of regrets. My sister didn’t really know how I felt about Terrance. I’d done much too good of job denying and disguising that fact all those years ago to really hold her accountable for my heartache, but still, the backstabber knew there was a rule that all black women held fast to…never date your girl’s exes. Surely, she knew the rule applied to sisters as well.
“What’s the favor?” I asked, rolling off a few sheets of toilet paper. I wanted to cry, but I didn’t dare ruin my makeup. I had to be out of the door at a meeting with a new client in fifteen minutes.
“I need you to come home as soon as possible and pull the wedding together for me.”
I popped to my feet like someone had sprung me from a Jack-in-the-box. “Janette Malcolm,” I said, using the sir name we shared. “I know you aren’t asking me to plan a wedding for you and my ex-boyfriend.”
Janette’s spoiled attitude came through on the phone. “Why not? You’re a wedding planner. That’s what you do for a living and besides it’s not like he’s a new ex. There’s a string of exes between him and you.”
I kept my mouth shut, because my temper was rising. My sister continued. “The favor is for me not him. I’m the one who needs the help. All Terrance will do is get a tux and show up.”
Terrance in a tux, the image took me back to high school. Specifically, to prom night which was the last time I’d seen Terrance in a tuxedo. He’d been wearing it for me, because he was my date. How crazy that the next time I’d see him in one he’d have my sister on his arm. That wasn’t right. In fact, it was all kinds of wrong.
I picked up the phone, walked into my closet and removed the dress I planning to wear. “I’m really booked out right now. There’s no way I can fit an out of state wedding in my schedule. Hire a local wedding planner.”
“I don’t have money for a wedding planner,” Janette protested, “and the only one who is the least bit reasonable is booked up for our date.”
“Choose another date. I mean, it’s not like you guys can’t move it. He just asked you to marry him last night.”
“We can’t move the date.” Janette hesitated. There was a nervous pause in the air and then she continued, “The wedding is in a month.”
“A month?” I dropped my dress. The hairs stood up on the back of my neck. “Why the rush?”
“We need to have it really soon. Remember, I said I had two things to tell you?” Janette paused again. “I’m six months pregnant.”
 * * *
Gayle Lincoln, my assistant and best friend hovered over my desk. “Are you going to do it?”
 I took a deep breath. “I don’t think I have a choice.”
Gayle crossed her arms in front of her chest. “Of course you do. We all have choices.”
“She’s my sister.” I dropped my eyes to the paperwork in front of me. I could sense Gayle rolling hers above me.
“She’s being unfair.” Gayle tapped the end of her pen on the desk as if to get my attention. “If she’s going to marry him, which I suppose she nearly has to at this point, she should at least have the decency to do it in Vegas or something.”
I had considered suggesting that or even a wedding honeymoon combination on a tropical island or cruise ship, but Janette was too pregnant for that kind of travel. Even if she wasn’t she wouldn’t do it. I raised my eyes to meet Gayle’s. “You don’t know Janette. She’s dreamed of having a big wedding her entire life. Every year when we were children she’d get a wedding dress for her Barbie doll. She’s been watching those wedding and Bridezilla shows for years.”
“So,” Gayle said, “I repeat. She should plan something small if she can’t hire someone to handle it.”
I tightened my grip on the arms of my chair. “I know I sound crazy, but at the end of the day, after the weddings done and even after she has the baby, she’s going to be my sister. That’s never going to change. I don’t have much family. I can’t cut her off over a man, even if he was mine.” I rolled my eyes.
Gayle grunted like she always did when she was frustrated with me. “I’m not saying cut her off. I’m saying tell her off. Be angry. Let her know how you feel.”
“What’s getting all worked up on the phone going to solve?”
“You’ll be able to check it off the to-do list before you get to Garrison. You don’t want to blow up there. You’ll be in the same house.”
I picked up my cell phone and push the gallery icon for the picture Janette had sent to me just this morning. It was a sideways view of her belly. The corners of my mouth turned up. I shook my head. “Fighting isn’t good for pregnant women.”
“Puleeze, pregnant women don’t get a pass on everything.”
I sighed and threw up my hands. “You’ve met her. She’s fragile.”
Gayle pinned me with a look.
I smirked. “Okay, she’s manipulative, but that’s not changing.”
“And you’re allowing yourself to be manipulated which apparently isn’t changing either.” Gayle took a seat. “What’s up with this Terrance anyway? You’ve never really talked about him before this. How do you feel about him?”
I let out a long breath and closed my eyes. “I don’t know.” I shook my head. “I haven’t really seen him in a few years. The last time I was home he was dating some woman from Atlanta, but that didn’t work out.”
“So, you keep up with his comings and goings.”
“No, my sister gossips about everybody in Garrison. I listen.”
“How do you feel when she talks about him?”
I shrugged. “Ambivalent. It’s like I want him to move on, but I don’t.”
Gayle nodded. “I’m not trying to be a shrink here, but have you ever thought about why?”
I dropped my head to the side like Gayle had asked me a stupid question. “Because he’s the only man who has ever asked me to marry him. That’s a big deal. I want to keep him on a shelf for that.”
Gayle looked confused. “I never wanted to keep anyone on a shelf because they proposed to me.”
I smirked again. “Gayle, you’re gorgeous. You get a marriage proposal every day on the subway.”
“From crazy men,” she retorted.
“Well you had four from men who weren’t crazy before you finally accepted the fifth. Women like me don’t have men falling all over us.”
Gayle narrowed her glare. “What do you mean women like you?”
I wasn’t sure what I meant. I let my words swirl around in my head before I responded. “Look, I know I’m pretty,” I started. That was true, I wasn’t as skinny as I wanted to be, but my smooth mocha brown skin and large dark eyes had always been assets men complimented me on. I was also a little on the tall side, five seven to be exact. My legs went on forever in the four inch heels I hiked around in everyday. Men couldn’t seem to get enough of those either, but that had been in my twenties and early thirties. The cat calls were less frequent now and seemed to come from the mouths of drunks rather than good looking men who were actually trying to holler. The ones who weren’t drunk were five foot five and balding. I sighed and waved my hand. “Let’s move on.”
 Gayle slid a folder in front of me. “I did the things you asked. I reserved the banquet hall, the videographer and photographer. Those are the contracts from the vendors and your payment receipts. I’ll email everything so you have digital copies.”
“Fantastic! What would I do without you?”
“Hire two hardworking people to take my place.” She chuckled. “I also have a call in to the D.J. and limousine company.”
I sucked in a cleansing breath and fanned my fingers out across the desk. “Great, that’s a big help.”
“Did you want me to get you a list of caterers?”
“Some back ups. I have a small company in town I’d like to use. I’m going to call them myself. They’re family friends and I’m sure they could use the business.”
Gayle put the pen she’d borrowed back in my pencil holder. “Any thing else?”
“Yes,” I replied. “You can book me a flight to Atlanta. I’m headed to Garrison, Georgia, whether I want to or not.”
