Melinda Johnson has always felt called to ministry. So, when her father, Bishop Langston Johnson, decides to step down after thirty years of leadership at Omega Christian Center, it seems only natural for her to take his place. But Bishop Johnson feels led by a God who has other things in mind, and to succeed him, he appoints Steven Marks-a man who is opposed to female pastors, not to mention the fact that he is Melinda’s ex-fianci.
Feeling defeated, Melinda nevertheless maintains her position as the church’s Missions and Community Outreach Director. Frequent interaction with the new bishop incites bitter sparring-and rekindles long-suppressed attraction, which grows only stronger when Melinda develops a relationship with Steven’s precious daughter, Brianna, who’s still struggling with the death of her mother.
Can Steven and Melinda set aside past pains, forgive each other, and learn to love again? Or will their opposing positions regarding women preachers keep them forever at odds?

My Review -
A broken engagement, a grieving little girl, a bitter difference of opinion...

I have to admit that I have never really considered the plight of the female preacher on the male dominated preaching circuit, so the plot of this story gave me pause and in the end taught me some things. Mainly, "It's a man's world" and it really is a struggle for the women to get in, even in the house of our Lord.

I was impressed with this story, moved by it and as I've said educated by it. Miller's writing style and voice captured me from the first page and kept me up until two a.m. finishing the last. I admit that Melinda's character worked my nerves for a while. I couldn't see why she was being so stubborn about the broken engagement from Steven when it seemed to me it was a joint decision, but the author took me there, the explanation of the depth of that broken promise and all the preceded and followed it was pure story telling mastery. I love when an author ties it all together. Every little piece. Miller did that and so much more. I actually cried.

I recommend Yesterday's Promise to anyone looking for a good read. I can hardly wait till the next book in this series is released.

The Adventures of Nurse Nicole – N is for Nurse Virtual Book Tour (Giveway Included)

About the Book

The Adventures of Nurse Nicole is a wonderfully clever and bright series about a nurse with three children who are curious about nursing. The Adventures of Nurse Nicole, “N is for Nurse” describes the art and science of nursing from A to Z with positive images of the nursing profession. Nursing is one of the most sought after and trusted professions in the world. This is a must-have book, because everyone will need a nurse one day. The next book from The Adventures of Nurse Nicole is titled, “Wash Your Hands,” and is also available.

My Review

Great children's book. In a time when so many nurses are overworked and burned out, it's nice to see a nurse so dedicated to her vocation that she wants to share it with the world. I was very impressed with these books. As for the content itself, the pictures were very well done and the text very informative. It was delivered in a way that held my 7 year old son's attention which was a good sign, because I believe he's on the upper end of the age spectrum for her audience. The first book, N is for Nurse is one that I wish I had several years ago. Not only does it share information for children about healthcare, it's a great tool for reviewing the alphabet.

My favorite of the two was "Wash Your Hands" probably because I'm constantly telling my son to wash his hands. The book addressed every area of my concern with respect to handwashing from handling the family dog to playing sports. It was nice to have this resource to drill the message home. The graphics of germs were also very well done. I highly recommend these books for parents of children from ages 3 - 7.

Breaking All The Rules - An Excerpt

Deniece Malcolm’s baby sister is marrying her ex, even though she knows there’s a rule about dating exes. Rules are made to be broken right? Deniece doesn’t think so, but she’ll help with the wedding and break a few of her own.

I've posted other excerpts from Breaking and I always begin at Chapter 1 of any project I have because well doesn't it need to be good from the first word? I think so. Anyway, today I decided to pop around and I pulled an excerpt out of chapter 5. Deneice Malcolm, our heroine, has a rule about dating younger men, but our hero, Ethan Wright is becoming pretty irresistible.

An excerpt from Chapter 5
 I felt a stabbing pain in my heart. I’d dubbed myself Mrs. Terrance Wright in high school and now my sister would have the title. I sighed. This was too weird.
I lie on the bed for a few minutes listening to my sister move around downstairs, then outside and eventually heard her car start and pull away. I had yet to ask her where she and Mr. Terrance Wright were planning to live. This house was bigger than the one Terrance owned or rented or whatever was his situation. I’d been afraid to ask her, not wanting to learn that that they would reside here and raise their babies in this house, because if they did it would no longer feel like home.
I rolled over on my stomach and pressed my made-up face into the comforter. I just didn’t know. Everything about her choice of husband made the marriage difficult for me to stomach. Of course she hadn’t been thinking about that when she’d gone out and slept with him. I groaned. Now I knew for sure why you stayed away from the exes.  I’d never really thought about the implications of it before. I just knew to follow the rule. Whomever had made it had to be a woman that had been through this “ish”, because only someone who had been where I was could possibly understand all the factors that could come into play when someone close to you dated an ex.
I stood and surveyed myself one more time in the mirror. The makeup made me look like I was going on a date. I couldn’t have Ethan thinking I was going to break my “no dating younger men” rule. There was enough rule breaking going on right now. Besides, he was Terrance’s cousin, dating me would mean he was with Terrance’s ex. Did men care about that? I wasn’t sure.
“Why are you even going there in your mind?” I asked my reflection. “Ethan is a friend and he wouldn’t ever be anything more.” I walked into the bathroom that joined my bedroom to my sisters and washed the makeup off my face, reapplied my moisturizer and a little lip gloss just as the doorbell rang. I turned to leave the room and then turned back to the mirror and pointed at myself. “Ethan is just a friend,” I repeated. “He’s twenty-nine, Terrance’s cousin, and he appears to be backslidden. They’ll be no opening your mouth tonight.”

I turned off the light and made my way down the stairs. I pulled the door open and all that I’d just told myself seemed to evaporate into a mist in the sky. Ethan was standing there looking all kinds of yummy and chocolaty. Once that woodsy scent coming off his body hit my nostrils all I could think was that I wanted to break every rule I had ever made.

Excerpt
           “Stop preaching to me. I don’t want to hear it anymore. I’ve had enough of your self-righteousness.” The words continued to cut Jordan’s heart; words that she never heard before coming from the mouth of her husband, Eric. “You knew how I was before we got married.”  His tone deepened with every word.
            Standing in front of the sink, Jordan was frozen and motionless in the middle of the kitchen. She held the dish towel in one hand and a plate in the other. She turned and faced Eric, whose eyes were cold and hard.  The verbal blows kept coming.  Her mouth opened wide, but no words could be formed when he uttered the deadly words, “I want a divorce.”

A review of Breaking All The Rules from Patricia Woodside

Two sisters.  The older one has been focused on growing her business and is not married nor does she have any real prospects.  The younger one, the spoiled one, is pregnant and getting married...to the older sister's ex.

Some rules are made to be broken…

Deniece Malcolm is shocked and heartbroken when she finds out her baby sister, Janette, is marrying Terrance Wright, because she was the one who was supposed to marry him! Everybody knows there’s a rule about dating exes. Janette is pregnant and not only is this wedding happening, but Deniece has to arrange the festivities.

Deniece’s feelings and pride are hurt, but surprisingly, Terrance’s younger, sexier, cousin, Ethan Wright, is there to provide a listening ear and a strong bicep to cry on. Ethan’s interested in Deniece, but she has a rule about dating younger men. Despite her resistance, things heat up between them and Deniece begins to wonder if it’s time to break a few rules of her own.

In this first novella in the Second Chances novella series from Christian fiction author Rhonda McKnight, Deniece Malcom has all she can do to juggle her sister's time and budget-challenged wedding, her ex-boyfriend's attempts to talk away from little sister's ears, and the flirtations of Ethan, a former pro soccer player who everything she might want in a guy, if she overlooks his age and his seeming lack of faith.

Book Trailer

Five Minutes With The Author

1) What started your writing career?

Marian: For most authors', they might say that, for them, it began with a love for reading books. For me, it is more the creative aspect of writing. The ability to use my imagination to create something that can be ripped right out of the pages of reality for all women.

2) Did you have any obstacles you  had to overcome?

Marian: My biggest obstacle was getting out of my own way. I've  learned that most times, we are our own obstacles and must learn to get out of our own way, so that we can move forward.

3)  How do you deal with negative reviews?
Marian: I try to learn from them. Author's sometimes get the good, bad and the ugly, when it comes to reviews. However, there is something positive that comes out of  it all.

4)What's that?
Marian: Your work sparked an emotion in the reader.

5) What advice do you  have for aspiring writers?
Marian: The best piece of advice that I can offer any aspiring writer is….that no journey can start unless you put two feet on it and start walking. Being an author is a journey. You start by writing. You continue by writing with passion. You grow by writing with purpose.

6) What's new for you in 2014?

I am looking forward to releasing a new book: "Blue Butterfly".

Breaking All The Rules on Pinterest

I love Pinterest. I find it very relaxing to pin things to a board. I'm a bit of a collector and Pinterest is the perfect way to gather up stuff without actually having to make room for it. :) And don't get me started on the food porn..

Anyway, I created a board for the novel, Breaking All The Rules, but it wasn't on purpose. I usually print pictures and hang them up in my office as inspiration while I write. Well, I write everywhere now...at Starbucks, during lunch, in the car, etc. I decided to save ink and make my inspiration board accessible to me wherever I was, so I started pinning. Once I was finished I thought it would be nice to share with my readers. I had no idea other authors were making board.  A few of my readers joined in with pins of their own and made it more fun.

Please pop over, take a look and let me know what you think. Follow me too. I'll follow back, especially if you have pictures of food. :)

Love On A Budget by Norma L. Jarrett

About the Book

Jake Jiles was always handy with tools. Despite his love for all things do-it-yourself, he went to college and majored in business to fulfill his parents’ dream. He finally got the courage to leave his corporate job and start his “Honey-Do-4-Hire” business. Less than a year in, he’s already exhausted his savings and still living at home with his mother, but he’s determined to birth his franchise. Consumed with his business and fresh off a breakup, he wasn’t in the market for Mrs. Right. But after completing a job on Valentine’s Day, his potential dream girl, Sky showed up. After a brief chat over her car dilemma, he ignored the chemistry and left without her number. But cupid and God had other plans. After a divine connection, the only thing that stood between Jake and Sky, were funds. Will Jake pursue “Love on a Budget” or miss out because the price is too high?

Sample Chapter
Chapter 13 – Distressed Damsels
            Jake said a mental thank you for the truck’s navigation system and pulled over on the side of the road.  So much for relaxation, duty calls.  He walked up to the door and heard a few women laughing loud.  He had on his work pants, Honey-Do-4-Hire logo shirt, cap and boots and carried a small tool box.  The door opened before he could knock.
            “Um, you must be Mr. Honey-Do.”  Yasmine was standing there with a drink, in heels, a mini skirt, crop top and a feather boa around her neck.
            “Yes, I guess that would be me.  May I come in?”
            “Girl, get out the way and let the man in.”  Jake heard a voice from the back.
            Yasmine turned around, “Meeka, hush. I was the one who called. I’m the damsel in distress.” She extended her hand. “Yasmine Nash.”
He reached out his free hand and shook hers. “Jake… Jiles.”
She smiled then sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes at Meeka.  “Please come in.  The kitchen’s this way.”  She walked slow and put her heels to work as her black mini swung from side to side.  Jake kept his eyes forward and did a mental eye roll.
            “Um, um.  That thang right there.” Meeka said aloud, not caring that Jake heard.  “Dang, let me go break something.” She crunched on a carrot stick then licked her pink lips.
            By this time Bree, Yasmine’s other friend had arrived and was sitting in the living room with her legs crossed, unfazed.
            “It’s the garbage disposal.” Yasmine said as she pushed Meeka out the way.
            “You mind?”  Jake made sure the switch was off, then knelt down with his flashlight.  “Just a minute…I need to slide under here.” He pushed the reset button and nothing happened.  “Seems like something fell in and jammed it.” He slid back out and stood up.  “Let me see…” He put on some rubber gloves and grabbed a few tools from his box.  He slid back under the sink. He unscrewed a few parts and knocked around.  Finally he was able to dislodge the culprit—a chewed up dish cloth as he emerged from beneath the sink.
            “Ugh, that’s disgusting.” Meeka frowned.
            “Uh, I know you ain’t talking with your non-housekeeping self.  This is the thanks I get for planning this fabulous soiree for your lonely-no-man-having—”
            “Ladies, ladies, um don’t mean to interrupt, but I have another job after this.”
He walked over and placed the dishrag in the trash.  “Do you mind if I go wash my hands? We can wrap it up when I come back.”
            “No, not at all.”  Yasmine said.
            When he left to go to the restroom he heard loud whispers.
            “Gurl, I’mma ask him.  What woman would let a man that fine work on Valentine’s Day? If that were my Boo, huh, I’d serve him breakfast and spend all day with him.” Meeka dipped the ladle in the punch bowl and poured some in her cup.
            When he opened the door to come out he started to write up the bill.
            “Yoo-hoo, Mr. Honey-Do?  I know you gots to have a woman.  A man Boris-Kodjoe, Idris-Elba fine?”  Meeka’s ponytail whipped in animation as her neck moved with her words.
            He smiled. “I’m flattered. Don’t mean to be rude, but I really do have to go.”   Jake flashed his smile again, hoping they’d be satisfied with that.
            “Yeah, we know the real reason you rushing off.  You got a woman.” Yasmine said, batting her extra long lashes. She signed off on the bill and paid him.
            “Appreciate it,” he said, ignoring their inquiries. “Okay, ladies, enjoy the rest of your evening.  If you need anything else, you have my information.”
            “Anything?” Meeka said, fanning herself. She watched him until he left out the door.
~~~~~
As Jake stepped outside and rushed out to the driveway, he noticed a woman that was seated inside her car fumbling with the door. She was visibly frustrated and talking to herself. “I can’t believe I just did this. Ugh!”  She opened the door wide and jiggled a latch.
Jake walked toward her. “Excuse me, miss, you okay?  Need some help?”
She sucked her teeth. “I did the most stupid thing. So like me,” she said, focused on her lock.
“What happened?   Can I take a look at it?” he asked, concerned.
She finally stopped to focus on Jake.  Her eyes moved from his work boots, to his jeans, to his arms bulging from his work shirt, then to his handsome face.  Then she saw the logo. “Honey-Do-4-Hire?” She chuckled.
“Look, I’m not the one needing help.” He wasn’t laughing.
She raised her finger. “I guess you’re right.”  For a few seconds their eyes connected.  She couldn’t help but notice his milk brown skin and iridescent eyes. She was caught off guard by how handsome he was, but she didn’t let on.
 “C’mon, let me check it out.  What happened?”  He knelt down to look at the side of the door.
 “Well, I was rushing trying to get over here. Yasmine always nags about being on time. I wasn’t even gonna come.  I was all set for my movie marathon. But nooo, she started whining.  Anyway, I stopped at the grocery store and slammed my seat belt in the car door.  I had to hold the door closed on the way here. Thank God it was less than a mile.  This is gonna cost me some money.  The electronic door lock isn’t working.”
As she sat there explaining, he took in her face. He loved the way her short layered cut highlighted her high cheekbones.  As she spoke, her long eyelashes bounced every few seconds.  Her skin is so smooth.  Jake quickly focused, “Okay, stay calm.  If you step out I can get in to get a better look.”
She turned her body so she could step out. Jake tried not focus too hard on her athletic body.  She was casually chic in jeans, a white top and high heel boots with a scarf wrapped loosely around her neck.
He placed his tool box next to the door. He eased in the driver’s seat and immediately went into damage control.  He reached down in the box to grab a small metal tool and jiggled the area where the door closed.  He jumped back out.  “Okay, there’s good news and bad news.”
“I figured,” she said, folding her arms. She bit the side of her baby pink glossed lip.
Jake watched her eyes widen. “The good news?  I fixed it so you can at least close and lock your door manually. The bad news…you’re gonna need some electrical work on the lock. Off to the dealer you go. ”
She took a deep breath.  “Ugh. Between maintenance and super unleaded gas, this car has cost me some money.”
            He grinned and shrugged his shoulders. “Sorry I couldn’t do more.”
            She smiled warmly, her teeth sparkling like the diamond studs in her ears. “No worries, at least you tried.  So what’s this gonna cost me?”
            “You’re joking, right?  I barely did anything.”
            “Well, chivalry isn’t dead after all.” She raised her neatly arched eyebrows.            “There’s still a few of us out here.” Jake grabbed his box.
            She stuck out her hand, “Thanks, um…”
            He pulled the side of his shirt where his name was embroidered.
            “Jake,”
            He grabbed her hand, “You’re quite welcome…”
            “Skylar, Skylar Ross.”
Yesterday's Eyes by Catherine Flowers
About the Book
Ida has never been close to her mother, Mavis, but she is a little too close to Mavis's husband, the less-than-godly preacher of First Presbyterian Church. When Ida gives birth to a baby boy, she claims the preacher is the baby's father.
After Ida is convicted of negligent homicide and goes to prison, Mavis finds herself faced with the task of raising Ida's six-year-old daughter, Tia. Mavis barely knows her grandchild, and must find a way to form a bond while she's still struggling with her husband's betrayal.
Tia has already spent time with an abusive foster parent, and now must learn to survive with her emotionally distant grandmother.
Catherine Flowers debut novel brings readers the powerful story of three generations of women who must come to terms with the past and learn how to forgive one another if there is any hope of healing.
 Five Minutes With The Author
Which book did you find the hardest to birth?
Yesterday’s Eyes is the only book I’ve completed thus far. I’m currently working on a collection of short stories, and one of the stories proved to be more of a challenge than the others because I couldn’t decide the fate of the central character.
Which book is your current favorite?
Well, since Yesterday’s Eyes is my only novel so far, I’d have to say that’s my favorite!
How would you describe your writing style?
What works for me is writing in a style that is somewhat tight, compact, and to the point.   I try to minimize unnecessary words (or remove them altogether) in order to keep the story flowing. As a Christian author, I’m always trying to make sure I’m writing for the glory of God. So, my style of writing doesn’t just address real-life issues, but it also incorporates a solution to the problem which is Jesus Christ.
Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind?
Occasionally, I may turn on classical music in the hopes of further inspiring my creative side. But mostly, I prefer to write in complete silence.
 Tell us anything about you as a writer that you think might be interesting or unusual.
Yesterday’s Eyes originally started out as a five page story about a girl whose brother was killed in an automobile accident. I wrote the entire story in one night back in 1981. Later, I revisited the story, changed the entire content of it, and it evolved into a 200 plus page novel. Then, I revised it once more after I rededicated myself to Jesus Christ because some of the content was inappropriate.
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Ernest Hemingway said, “The writer must write what he has to say, not speak it.” So, my advice to aspiring writers would be to stop talking and write! I would also recommend taking creative writing courses to improve their craft. And the writer should always make sure that whatever is written has substance and resonates.
Writers are often encouraged to write what they know. Have you found that to be the case with your writing?
Only to a degree. It’s good to write about what you know from a technical point of view as far as describing locations and setting timelines; this gives the story more credibility. But when it comes to situations and characters - embellishment is the key. That’s when the imagination gets to come out and play. That’s why it’s called fiction.
Five Minutes With The Author
When did you begin to love writing?
I remember always loving stories, whether they were on paper or in my head. As soon as I could read and write, I began to write stories and cut and paste pictures to go with my stories. I read every book I could get my hands on and I lived for these imaginary characters. All through middle school, high school, and college  I wrote for school publications and enjoyed every creative moment of it.
Did you know you would be an author?
Yes, at the back of my mind, I knew I would write a book one day. However, my career track was originally journalism because I was steered that way by teachers.Unfortunately, I didn’t realize I should have majored in creative writing.
Why do you call yourself a kingdom writer?
In everything I write, I try to glorify God’s kingdom.  My goal is to illustrate God’s love through the lives of ordinary people.
When did you publish your first book?
My first published book was a collection of poetry entitled, When Torn Down Is All You Know. A few years later, at the end of 2006, I received my first two book deal with Kensington’s Urban Christian Books. My first novel, The Lovechild, was released in August 2008.
What would you say have been the highlights of your literary career?
I currently have five novels in print, including my latest release, Scorched. My next novel, When Kingdom Comes, will be released in August 2014. Just knowing that my books are available in bookstores and libraries across the country and the world is very humbling for me. I love it most when people write to me to say that they enjoyed the book or that it had a specific impact on their life.
Which book of yours is your favorite?
Although I have a particular liking of the characters of the joy series, I would have to say that my favorite book is Scorched because of the love story.
Tell us about Scorched.
Scorched was released on June 25th 2013. Nila is a beautiful Indian woman who is struggling with her faith. Although she is still traumatized by her arranged marriage, domestic abuse and the fire that changed her life, she is still being accused of murdering her husband. As life is not easy for women in India,Nila is forced into a life of illegal bar dancing in Bangalore to support herself and her daughter.  When she runs into Malcolm, a handsome, womanizing, and ambitious old acquaintance from her college days in the United States, they become close friends;she still fears any kind of intimacy. When a rich American runway model attempts to steal Malcolm’s heart, Nila begins to re-evaluate her relationship with Malcolm but it may be too late.
Why did you decide to write about India?
I always enjoy taking adventurous trips in my imagination, although I haven’t visited there yet. Believe it or not the character came first and then the destination. I wanted to show what life was like for women in India and what it was like for an American living and working in Bangalore.
What did you enjoy most about writing Scorched?
I enjoyed writing Malcolm’s character because he was so irresistible and almost chivalrous, at least to Nila. I loved softening his heart underneath that fine, muscular exterior.
What would you like your readers to know that they may not all ready know?
I’d like them to know that I write screenplays now, that I have one movie released on dvd, Searching For The Right Thing and it’s available for purchase on Amazon. Look for my second production to be released next fall.
What should we expect from you next?
Definitely more books and more movies which shed light in a dark world.
